Overview:
We are hiring Vacuum Technicians in the Fusion Technology Group of the Fusion Energy Division (FED) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). In this role, you’ll support assembly, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and operation of the vacuum systems for the Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX) and other technology development program (as needed) that are supported by the U.S. DOE Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) Program.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform assembly operations and modifications on precision electro-mechanical equipment.
- Monitor and maintain specialized components and systems during and after commissioning.
- Participate in installation, testing, and commissioning of vacuum systems.
- Assemble, test, certify, and document mechanical and vacuum systems and their components.
- Set-up, operate, calibrate, and ensure integrity of various test equipment and apparatus.
- Calibrate and ensure the integrity of vacuum-driven requirements and procedures.
- Develop procedures and documentation related to the design, fabrication, testing, and operation of mechanical and vacuum systems and their components; assist in documenting records for assembly, testing and qualification.
- Maintains test and measurement data and any other documentation records related to fabrication, testing, commissioning and operation.
- Uses electronic and mechanical test and measurement equipment to verify vacuum system and component performance and integrity.
- Uses computers to collect, record, and analyze data for accepting, operating, and maintaining mechanical and vacuum systems.

Basic Qualifications:
- An Associates Degree in mechanical technology or a related technical field of study and 2-4 years of relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience in mechanical technology or a related technical field required may be considered.
- Experience or knowledgeable with vacuum systems, vacuum components, and instrumentation and associated test equipment (e.g., leak detectors, RGA's etc.), preferably in rough, high, and ultra-high vacuum environments.
- Familiar or knowledgeable in the construction, assembly, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, testing and operation of mechanical and vacuum systems and components required.
- Experience in the use of mechanical and electronic test and measurement equipment required.
- Must be familiar with use of office automation tools (such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases).
- Must have good written and oral communications skills.
- Must be willing to learn new skills as needed to perform the job effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of electrical power, instrumentation and computers is desirable.
- Experience working on vacuum systems is desirable.
- Proven ability to work individually and/or as part of a team, including participation at remote facilities, and contribute based on knowledge and experience.
