The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.
Our group is responsible for the continued development and operation of the Single Particle, Clusters and Biomolecule & Serial Femtosecond Crystallography Instrument (SPB/SFX) sited on the SASE1 beamline. As a group we support our users in executing a diverse range of scientific experiments and have an active, collaborative, in-house research program.
For our SPB/SFX group we are looking for an
Instrument scientist (f/m/d) for single particle experiments
The Position
Develop, operate, and maintain sample delivery equipment for single particle imaging experiments
Lead efforts to optimize sample delivery for single particle imaging experiments, including aerosol and electrospray capabilities
Contribute to, and organize, internal research projects with a focus on advancing the experimental capabilities in single particle imaging at X-ray free electron lasers
Operate the SPB/SFX instrument, support user groups through shifts and local contact duties
Requirements
PhD in experimental physics, X-ray imaging, or a related field
Good knowledge of X-ray diffraction physics, and/or other techniques such as coherent optics or crystallography
Previous experience of conducting single particle imaging experiments at FEL facilities
Expertise in aerosol sample delivery methods
Ability to conduct independent research while also contributing to ongoing team projects
Motivation to work in a diverse, international team of scientists, engineers and technicians

This appointment is initially limited to three years and may – subject to a later decision – be prolonged by two years.
