Call for expression of interest for Faculty positions in Physics at the University of Pisa, Italy.
The Department of Physics of the University of Pisa (https://www.df.unipi.it/en/) is an internationally recognized center for scientific research and advanced education in Physics and in its interdisciplinary applications. To enhance our academic program, we are seeking scientists with an outstanding record of high impact research and scientific leadership.
The Department of Physics invites expressions of interest in view of the possible activation of permanent positions at the Associate and/or Full Professor level from any fields in Physics, covered through a direct call procedure.
According to the Direct Calls program of the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (L.230 art. 1 c.9) positions could be addressed to:
Scientists and scholars who have been working abroad with an equivalent position for at least three years,
Recipients of European Research Council (ERC) grants (recipients of MSC Global Fellowships may be eligible for Tenure-Track Researcher (RTDB) positions).
The successful candidates will be expected to actively contribute to the Department development, by excellent teaching and participation in large-scale and highly competitive grant applications.
Teaching may be delivered in Italian or in English. Although knowledge of Italian is not a prerequisite, it is expected that hired candidates will develop, over the course of the first two years upon recruitment, a level of knowledge adequate to allow an active participation in all the activities of the Department.
Applications must be submitted electronically at this link not after December 31st 2024. Applicants are requested to submit a brief CV, a list of publications, and a research statement.
The Department of Physics is committed to increasing the gender balance of its faculty and particularly welcomes applications from qualified women.
For successful candidates having held academic positions abroad, there are some tax benefits, as, for example, a tax relief on 90% of the salary that may be granted for a duration from 6 to 13 years. For more detailed information on tax benefits see the following link.
Submission of an application does not entitle the applicant to admission to the procedures of access to the teaching roles of the University.
The Department of Physics at the University of Pisa is an international center for scientific research and advanced education. Covered fields include the Physics of Fundamental Interactions, Physics of Matter, Theoretical Physics, Astrophysics and Applied Physics, with highly interdisciplinary research carried out in Nanotechnologies, Medical Physics, and in the Physics of the Universe. The Department takes part in many international research projects at the frontier of Science, and collaborates tightly with the Pisa Division of the National Institute for Nucler Physics, and with several Institutes of National Research Council. A relevant partnership subsists with the European Gravitational Observatory, whose gravitational wave detector VIRGO strongly involves our Department. The Department of Physics is the focus of a unique eco-system for higher education, in which we develop programmes jointly with researchers and professors of INFN, CNR, the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa.External funds for research, raised in recent years, amount to several tens MEuros. We also collaborate with the Italian Institute of Technology, and with industry at nationa...l and international level, through technology transfer projects carried out with companies in various fields (e.g. new materials, quantum technologies, aerospace). In the current National Research Quality Assessment (VQR-ANVUR), our Department is the highest in ranking among other Physics departments in its size quartile.Broad and intense teaching activities are performed for about 1000 undergraduate students, and 60 PhD students and postgraduate students specializing in Medical Physics, all interacting with current frontier research: Bachelor’s Degree in Physics; Master Degree in Physics; this is also connected with a double-degree path with Sorbonne Université and with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz; Inter-department Master Degree in Materials and Nanotechnologies; this is entirely taught in English; PhD in Physics; listed in the ‘Innovative PhD Schools’ by the Italian Ministry of University, this is carried out jointly with INFN; National PhD in Space Science and Technology, founded in 2022 and coordinated by the University of Trento; Specialization School in Medical Physics; Summer Schools promoted by the Department of Physics and validated by the University of Pisa; through Summer Schools, our undergraduate students can collaborate with international research groups. An example is our Summer School at Fermilab in Chicago. We are also proudly committed to scientific divulgation, in the framework of the ‘Bruno Pontecorvo’ Department Center, as well as in national and international projects, including initiatives focused on Citizen Science.
The AVS Career Center has listings for the latest science and engineering jobs in specialized disciplines like applied physics, astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, mechanical engineering, plasma physics, materials science and engineering, fluid mechanics and dynamics, optics and lasers, and electrical engineering plus teaching jobs for assistant, associate, and full professor roles.
