The School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at Arizona State University invites applications for a postdoctoral research scholar in Observations of Galaxy Evolution.
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to work in collaboration with Profs. Timothy Heckman and Sanchayeeta Borthakur. The research will be within the broad area of observations of the baryon cycle in galaxies. This includes the analysis and interpretation of observations of gas accretion, AGN- or starburst-driven outflows, and the properties of the circum-galactic medium and its interface with the interstellar medium. The available data include JWST IR and HST UV spectra, GALEX UV images, ground-based optical spectra and images, mm-wave observations of molecular gas, and radio observations of HI. The minimum qualifications are a PhD in astronomy or physics and research experience in galaxy evolution. The desired qualifications are familiarity with the analysis and interpretation of one or more of the types of data described above.
SESE is an interdisciplinary department, bringing together all of Earth and Space science at ASU, including astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, and geology. ASU faculty and scientists benefit from access to many telescopes, including the 6.5m Magellan telescopes in Chile, the 2x8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT telescope, and a host of 2m-class telescopes owned and operated by the State of Arizona. The initial appointment is for one year with subsequent annual renewal for up to two additional years contingent upon satisfactory performance, the needs of the university, and availability of resources. The estimated start date is January 1, 2025. This position comes with a competitive salary, funding for travel, moving expenses, and health insurance benefits.

Desired qualifications include:
Background in the analysis and interpretation of ground or space-based data regarding gas in galaxies and the circum-galactic medium.
Experience in comparisons of data to theory is also desired.
A demonstrated record of research and/or development accomplishment(s)
A demonstrated record of publication and/or documentation.
Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills
Evidence of strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
