SUMMARY:
The Department of Natural Sciences at Lawrence Technological University (LTU), a primarily undergraduate institution, invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Physics beginning in the fall of 2024 (starting date: mid-August).
The department includes undergraduate programs in biology, chemistry, and physics. We are strongly committed to undergraduate research and involve students in course-based and other research opportunities as early as their freshman year. There are currently four tenured faculty and one senior lecturer in the physics program, and 14 full-time faculty and staff in the Department of Natural Sciences. We offer three degree tracks: Bachelor of Science In Physics, Physics with a concentration in Computer Science, and a Physics and Mathematical Sciences double major.
The Department of Natural Sciences values diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are a member of the American Physical Society's Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Alliance (APS-IDEA). As a faculty member in physics, you will be invited to work with us on various fronts to ensure mutual growth irrespective of your background.
Lawrence Technological University is one of only 13 private, technological, comprehensive doctoral universities in the United States. Located in Southfield, LTU was founded in 1932, and offers more than 100 programs through its Colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Business and Information Technology, and Engineering. PayScale lists LTU among the nation’s top 11 percent of universities for alumni salaries. Forbes and The Wall Street Journal rank LTU among the nation’s top 10 percent. Students benefit from small class sizes and a real-world, hands-on, “theory and practice” education with an emphasis on leadership. Activities on Lawrence Tech’s 107-acre campus include over 60 student organizations and NAIA varsity sports.
JOB DUTIES:
Teaching undergraduate introductory- and upper-level physics lecture and lab courses, leading research endeavors (with a focus on undergraduate student engagement), and participating in LTU-focused as well as professional service activities. We strongly encourage applicants who are well prepared to engage undergraduate students in experimental or applied physics research experiences. Applicants with strong external collaborations will be given special consideration. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an active, independent research program in experimental or applied physics and show strong potential for external funding.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience in physics that allow the candidate to teach courses across the physics curriculum while developing/continuing a research program. A desire for excellence in undergraduate teaching is a requirement. The candidate is expected to have enthusiasm for modern methods of teaching physics, interdisciplinary collaborations, and undergraduate research.
TO APPLY:
Interested candidates should submit to this Google form https://tinyurl.com/LTUTenurePhysics a single pdf document containing: (1) a cover letter, (2) a current curriculum vitae, statements of (3) teaching philosophy (two pages maximum), (4) research experience and plan (three pages maximum), (5) a reflection on how their values advance diversity, equity, and inclusion, (6) name and contact information for three professional references.
