Research Field and Overview
The RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science operates the RI Beam Factory (RIBF), one of the world’s leading heavy ion accelerator facilities where nuclear physics and other basic and applied researches on accelerator science are conducted. The Safety Management Group is responsible for radiation safety and general safety management at the RIBF and the Radioisotope Center to ensure that research experiments are conducted safely. The group manages radiation safety for accelerators, sealed and unsealed radioisotopes, and nuclear fuel material through operation. The group also maintains and develops radiation safety equipment.

Technical Scientist or Senior Technical Scientist: 1 position
The position at the time of hiring will be determined through the selection process.
Job description
23W16:
The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Safety Management Group of the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science. The candidate will conduct a wide range of radiation safety management and general safety management operations for accelerators, radioisotopes, and nuclear fuel materials. Specifically, the candidate’s main tasks are taking measures to prevent external leakage radiation dose around the accelerator facility of the RI Beam Factory, and maintaining and supervising a radiation working environment to reduce the exposure of workers. To achieve the above, the candidate will lead the operation, maintenance, and development of the safety equipment such as radiation management system, etc. Additional duties include conducting research and development on the safety of high intensity beams generated from accelerators, and new unsealed RI applications. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the management of the group, too. Senior Technical Scientist is also expected to assist the group director.
23W18:
The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Safety Management Group of the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science. In cooperation with the RIKEN Safety Management Division, the candidate will conduct radiation safety management operations for radiation facilities in the Wako campus which includes heavy-ion accelerators in the RI Beam Factory (RIBF), the RIKEN accelerator-driven compact neutron source (RANS), and radioisotopes and nuclear fuel materials in the Radioisotope Center. The candidate will conduct quantitative monitoring of radiation dose around the facilities, take measures to prevent external leakage, and conduct maintenance of the radiation facilities, research and development for safety management. The candidate will also evaluate the calculation of radiation effects, consult with the Nuclear Regulation Authority in Japanese, and prepare and submit documents relevant to their authorization and approval. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the management of the group, too. Senior Technical Scientist is also expected to assist the group director.
Qualification
Doctoral degree (or equivalent research ability and background) in the relevant research field is required.
Experience in radiation safety management and qualification of First-Class Radiation Protection Supervisor are not necessary. As it is necessary to perform these tasks, the candidate must acquire the qualification after assuming the position. Applications from a wide range of related fields, including nuclear reactors and radiation therapy are highly welcome. To conduct research activities stated in “Job description”, the applicant must be able to perform smooth communication and documentation in Japanese.
Start of employment
RIKEN expects that the successful applicant will be able to take up this position at the earliest opportunity after July 1, 2024.
Application deadline
For applicant registration: Noon, December 8, 2023 (Japan time)
For revising or uploading application documents and letters of recommendation: Noon, December 15, 2023 (Japan time)
RIKEN is Japan's largest comprehensive research institution renowned for high-quality research in a diverse range of scientific disciplines. Founded in 1917 as a private research foundation in Tokyo, RIKEN has grown rapidly in size and scope, today encompassing a network of world-class research centers and institutes across Japan.
The Nishina Center operates the RI Beam Factory (RIBF), the world's highest performing heavy ion accelerator facility where radioisotopes that do not exist in nature are artificially created.
The Nishina Center promotes researches on the synthesis of superheavy elements with one prime example being nihonium, researches in the fields of magic numbers, nucleosynthesis in the universe, and reducing radioactive waste, as well as theoretical research linking these fields. The RIBF is also utilized for medical, agricultural, and IT purposes such as nuclear medicine, breeding, and semiconductor developments.
The AVS Career Center has listings for the latest science and engineering jobs in specialized disciplines like applied physics, astrophysics, atomic and molecular physics, mechanical engineering, plasma physics, materials science and engineering, fluid mechanics and dynamics, optics and lasers, and electrical engineering plus teaching jobs for assistant, associate, and full professor roles.
