The Department of Physics & Astronomy at UCLA seeks outstanding candidates for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in the area of Plasma and Fusion Physics. The position will focus on the development and application of a radial Faraday-effect polarimeter-interferometer diagnostic system designed to measure internal magnetic field perturbations. Work includes the internal measurement of electromagnetic turbulence, non-axisymmetric 3-D effects associated with MHD and fast-ion instabilities and externally applied magnetic fields in high-performance tokamak plasmas, as well as application to equilibrium reconstruction constraints. The experimental effort, to be performed in collaboration with the DIII-D Team, is anticipated to play a critical role in advancing the physics basis for future fusion reactors. Responsibilities will include hardware development and testing, system operation in support of experimental campaigns, data analysis and physics interpretation as well as dissemination of scientific results. Candidates will have flexibility to choose between a more physics or hardware development focus in their work. This position is an off-campus posting and the candidate will be on assignment at General Atomics in San Diego, CA working at the DIII-D National Fusion facility with the UCLA team located there. Initial appointment will be for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal or transfer to permanent position. Salary will follow UCLA standards for Postdoctoral Researchers and will scale with the applicant’s experience and qualifications (range: $55k to $70k). The position is open for immediate filling, however, the start date is flexible. Interested persons should send a cover letter and CV/resume with names and contact information for two references to Dr. David Brower at brower@physics.ucla.edu. Position will remain open until filled.
