We have an opening for a Technician/Technologist . You will work under general supervision to provide general technical support in the area of metallography, sample preparation and radiological decontamination, microscopy, physical metallurgy, and materials characterization for a variety of projects at LLNL. You will perform some of this work on radioactive materials in an inert-atmosphere glovebox. This position is in the Materials Characterization Group in the Materials Science Division.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
Provide basic technical support to personnel in the Materials Science Division service center.
Prepare a wide variety of samples for various microscopy techniques, including use of precision lapping and polishing techniques, and repair and maintain instrumentation and mechanical systems; much of the work will be performed on radioactive materials in inert atmosphere gloveboxes (on-the-job training will be provided).
Prepare, decontaminate, and load diamond anvil cells for physics experiments.
Work as an integral part of a results-oriented team on an ongoing basis.
Work under general direction on well-defined small projects and contribute to larger multi-disciplinary projects.
Solve basic technical problems, analyze, and interpret basic data, document work in lab notebooks and reports, and report results to principal investigators.
Properly handle laboratory and radioactive waste.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the 504.2 level
Provide solutions to moderately complex technical problems, such as designing and fabricating mechanical systems.
Write and maintain safety documentation for laboratory work.
Use of computer aided design (CAD) software in support of MSD Service Center Staff, e.g., for generating designs for laser cutting.
AA/AS in science, engineering, or chemistry, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Knowledge of basic microscopy (including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy).
Knowledge of basic sample preparation and polishing techniques.
Computer skills, including abilities in a variety of standard software programs. (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams).
Effective analytical skills to trouble-shoot and solve problems and recommend solutions.
Working knowledge of mathematics.
Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to work both independently and in a diverse team environment with scientific and technical personnel.
Additional qualifications at the 504.2 level
Experience working in a chemistry or materials science laboratory.
Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting programmatic deadlines.
Experience working with hazardous (e.g., radioactive) materials
Qualifications We Desire
Experience using scanning electron microscopy, or certificate in electron microscopy.
General knowledge of mechanical equipment, such as vacuum systems and laboratory instrumentation, experience working with radioactive material, and experience working in a glovebox.
General knowledge of chemistry and materials science, and/or experience with CAD software tools.
