Fermilab is seeking a Quantum Educational Program Leader. This position presents an exciting chance to create and lead a new quantum education program at Fermilab, the nation’s leading particle physics and accelerator laboratory! Under general supervision, develops Fermilab’s quantum science educational programs and services including workshops and institutes, classes, field trips, research internships, Web-based materials development and Maker Space materials and participates in program development and reporting and evaluation. Fermilab is a world leader in advancing quantum science and technology. This position in the Fermilab Office of Education and Public Engagement (EPE) will develop a quantum education program at Fermilab to work with, support, and amplify Fermilab’s quantum science and technology program by developing educational programs primarily at the K-12 level. This role will invent, imagine, design, prototype, implement, and evaluate Quantum Education programs, both virtually and in person. The objective for the Fermilab quantum education program is to establish Fermilab as a leader in the Quantum education space. This position will work closely with the other Education and Public Engagement program leads to integrate these newly developed offerings with the office’s established programs. Current EPE staff have a strong background in standard methodologies in both formal and informal education to support this role. EPE seeking a team member that can bring expertise in Quantum Science to further educational goals in this area. You Will - Develop and lead all Quantum Education programs including design, assessment of needs, formative and summative evaluation, recruitment, and advertising in alignment with the Education and Public Engagement office’s Strategic Plan.
- Ensure newly developed programs integrate with and support Fermilab quantum programs, including the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center and the Fermilab Quantum Institute (FQI)
- Partner with local, national, and international groups pioneering advances in K-12 Quantum education.
- Understand the current landscape of available K-12 Quantum educational programming.
- Reach a diverse and inclusive audience within the Chicagoland area.
- Conduct program sessions and supervise the presentation of others.
- Communicate with school administrators, teachers, students, and the public regarding newly developed Quantum Education program subject matter, availability, resources, and participation.
- Supervise on call staff participating in Quantum education programming.
- Own the evaluation of Quantum educational materials, organization of sessions, and the efficiency of the learning experience for assigned programs.
- Prepare reports relative to assigned programs, i.e. numbers of participants and general program descriptions.
- Work with educators and other partners to integrate Fermilab Quantum education into the overall educational plans of the participating teachers and schools.
- Prepare and monitor program budgets.
We Are Looking For: - Bachelor’s degree in physics or a related field with 5+ plus years of experience OR Masters or PhD degree in physics. A focus on Quantum science is preferred.
- Experience as a Teaching Assistant (including as a graduate student), science classroom teacher, leading science education programs, or in an informal science education or outreach capacity
- Some experience with adult learners preferred.
- Proven competence with varied technical tools and skills
- Outstanding organizational skills with attention to details.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
