Physics Laboratory Coordinator

The School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a full-time, twelve-month physics staff position of Laboratory Coordinator on the Hattiesburg campus to begin in August 2021. This position is dedicated to the day-to-day supervision of General Physics teaching laboratory programs. Duties consist of ongoing training and oversight of teaching assistants, laboratory preparation, assistance of students, grading, enforcement of laboratory regulations, maintenance of office hours, general logistics of laboratory management, maintenance of a safe laboratory environment, as well as delivery of lecture courses as needed. Candidates must hold a master’s degree in physics or a degree in a related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in physics. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also required. Responsibilities include the training and supervision of teaching assistants in general physics and astronomy laboratories and in upper level physics laboratories, promotion of safety among teaching assistants and students, conducting weekly physics laboratory staff meetings to coordinate laboratory and lecture logistics, serving as Instructor of Record for all laboratory sections, teaching physics classes; managing enrollment, handling honor code violations, handling ADA accommodations, student advisement as needed; equipment purchase, maintenance, configuration and inventory; design, construction and evaluation of educational materials, including quizzes and examinations for physics laboratories, including providing the original documentation from courses at the Hattiesburg campus to be modified as necessary by personnel responsible for Physics and Astronomy laboratory sections at additional sites; managing the physics tutorial center, including scheduling and supervising tutors, maintenance, and creation of necessary reports.
