Who are we looking for?
We are seeking an experienced Cryogenics Design Engineer to provide leadership for the cryogenic system design for an ambitious programme to accelerate the delivery of sustainable fusion energy - the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP).
The programme aims to deliver an integrated, net power generating concept design for fusion power plants and cryogenic systems and will be required to cool superconducting magnets and solidify fuels prior to injection into the reactor. Working in collaboration with technical experts within UKAEA, academia and industry, this role gives you the opportunity to have a direct contribution on the cryogenic systems which are expected to be one of the major electrical loads and need to be fully optimised to achieve the programme objectives of net power.
What will you be responsible for?
- Lead the development of an integrated cryogenic concept design to at least a preliminary front end engineering design standard before the end of the first tranche - Manage the cryogenic ‘thermal budget’ and optimise the resulting electrical loads - Calculate, and design for, heat loads including superconducting and resistive magnets operating at cryogenic temperatures in static and dynamic operation - Interface with the wider STEP team; leading design reviews and regularly communicating progress to the STEP Product Delivery Team Leaders - Own the cryogenic system design and supporting products, developing plans to meet programme objectives. Deliver all elements on time with respect to cost, quality and specification - Set the scope and gain commitments from cross-functional teams to deliver the planned work scope for the cryogenic system - Provide guidance to the wider fusion research and development workstreams to address gaps and inform critical decisions - Challenge conventional thinking by trying out new approaches, being creative and continuing to innovate
Essential skills, experience and competence required
- An advanced degree (or equivalent experience) in cryogenic engineering or a related discipline - A deep working or technical knowledge of cryogenics, ideally with extensive experience of concept design experience - A proven track record of delivering complex, high technology projects to quality, time and budget constraints using modern project management methodologies and tools - A strategic and innovative thinker - Demonstrable experience of collaborating with a range of key stakeholders - A solid understanding of modern standards in Quality Assurance, Safety, Health and the Environment - An ability to work and communicate with an interdisciplinary team
