As Associate Director, Product Safety Research and Testing, you will lead our research and testing program to leverage and synthesize data from both external and internal sources, guided by our protocols and procedures, to enhance the organization's product safety laboratory testing, advocacy positions, mobilization initiatives, and editorial content.
This position resides within the Safety Team, which is responsible for leading the organization's scientific and engineering investigations focused on Product Safety Research and Testing; Product Sustainability Research and Testing; and Food Safety, Nutrition, and Sustainability Research and Testing.
Identify emerging hazards with cross-CR stakeholders to determine product safety research and testing project priorities;
Develop, record, and manage proactive, evidence-based product safety assessments;
Create and support data science models and analyze data sets;
Partner with and periodically lead teams to develop innovative approaches to data collection, synthesis, and analysis including development of enterprise-wide data platforms to use and share data across teams;
Oversee the day-to-day operation and output of the Early Warning System (EWS), one of Consumer Reports' machine learning initiatives;
Represent Consumer Reports externally in public testimony, meetings with regulators, industry, and in media interviews and/or speaker at external conferences;
Work across teams to establish, reinforce, and adhere to consistent data analysis standards, adhering to CR's commitment to rigor, objectivity, and quality;
Manage other staff member(s) in the Product Safety Research and Testing Team, as required.
You have a Bachelor's degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) discipline plus at least 10 years experience in product safety testing, risk assessment, and/or public policy development. An advanced degree (MA, MS, MEng, MPH, MD, EngD, PhD, and/or equivalent) in a STEM discipline and comparable experience is strongly preferred.
Your industry experience in product testing is extensive in product manufacturing, product safety standards, and/or product safety.
You have knowledge of data analytical practices, machine learning/AI techniques (Python, R, predictive modeling and regression, etc.) and advanced statistical modeling and analytics.
