We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher in the area of laser physics, laser materials processing and material science with emphasis on laser-matter interactions in metals and metals-based additive manufacturing. You will develop new diagnostics to study laser-matter interaction across several applications such as laser micro-machining, additive manufacturing technologies, and laser-induced shocks in materials and contribute to MSD's capabilities in laser-matter interaction science which includes the development of new laser system requirements for emerging applications. This position is in the Laser Material Interaction Science Group in the Materials Science Division.
- Conduct fundamental research in laser-matter interaction science, laser-materials processing and related microscale characterization.
- Develop laser-based approaches for studying and processing materials.
- Perform complex measurements, analysis, and modification of optical systems.
- Engineer, construct, and modify optical apparatus for materials characterization.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent Ph.D. Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field.
- Experience in laser technology and optics, and in optical diagnostics including, e.g. interferometry, pump-probe spectroscopy, and high-speed imaging.
- Knowledge of thermal and optical properties of materials, e.g. metal alloys, wide gap semiconductors and VisNIR optical materials.
- Knowledge of shock physics and high strain rate phenomena and of high-power laser propagation and related nonlinear optical effects.
- Experience with fundamentals of laser-matter interactions and with CW and pulsed (fast/ultrafast) laser systems.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Proficient interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff with the ability to work independently as well as in multidisciplinary research teams.
- Proficient fundamental written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated capabilities in delivering presentations and preparing written reports.
- Experience in using class 4 lasers, optics layout and engineering.
- Experience in computer programming for data analysis (e.g. Python, Matlab, Mathematica, C/C++), or with computer software for instrumentation design and control (e.g. LabView, Zemax).
- A solid mathematical background and knowledge of optical transport theory.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
