Position Summary: The American Physical Society (APS) is searching for two Associate Editors in Chief for its growing portfolio of Physical Review journals. The AEiCs will oversee and direct the management of the individual journals, and shape and develop the overall editorial structure. Each AEiC will be responsible for a specific portfolio of journals.
The positions present a unique opportunity to contribute to trusted physics publications, APS’s Physical Review journals. The AEiCs report to the Editor in Chief and work with a first-rate team of professional Editors. These collaborative roles require a dynamic personality, strong scientific background, and effective managerial performance to oversee our broad editorial operations, contribute to the overall editorial strategy, and help to guide the editorial direction for the journals.
As part of a scholarly organization, the AEiCs will work with senior staff throughout the Editorial Office as well as colleagues in other departments, including Accounting, Communications, Development, Human Resources, Information Technology, Meetings, Outreach, Program, and Public Affairs.

Direct supervision of Physical Review Managing Editors
Indirect supervision of the staff reporting to the Managing Editors
Collaboration with Editor in Chief and Publisher on journal development and policies
Collaboration with other colleagues across APS
Active participation in editorial and cross-departmental projects
Building ties with the community, especially via our Editorial Board and at conferences
PhD in physics or related field, plus relevant managerial experience
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to thrive in the rapidly evolving publishing and editorial environments
Demonstrated ability to provide thoughtful leadership amidst change
Deep knowledge of scientific publishing
Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
Ability to make prompt independent evaluations and decisions
Facility in managing multiple, changing priorities
Excellent attention to detail and follow-through
Travel This position requires business travel within and outside the United States to attend conferences and other events, and to interact with scientists at universities, national laboratories, and other research institutes.
Most work performed in an office environment
Flexible work hours to accommodate the time differences for meetings and events as requested
The position is based at the editorial offices in Ridge, New York, on Long Island, 100 km east of Manhattan (near Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University). Regular presence in the Ridge office is required, but partial telecommuting could be negotiated.
