PROJECT DETAILS: A postdoctoral research associate opportunity in nanofabrication science and technologies is available in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland (UMD) in College Park, MD (http://www.mse.umd.edu) to join a collaborative research team at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Physical Measurement Laboratory (https://www.nist.gov/pml) in Gaithersburg, MD developing novel neutron interferometric phase imaging method based on a new class of grating-based nanofabricated devices and structures. The new neutron interferometer will allow a vastly different technique of precise measurement of "big G", universal gravitational constant, and may shed more light on our understanding of gravity, and may assist searches for forces that lie outside our current knowledge of the universe.
The unique grating interferometer will also allow innovative measurements the quantum decoherence of neutrons transmitted through a matter and will enable unprecedented understanding of nanostructure of wide spectrum of heterogeneous systems (e.g. highly-efficient batteries, blood clots, ageing concrete, multiphase flow in colloidal and geological systems, tissue scaffolding and 3D printed materials). As a future thrust, coherent neutron beams may also play a role in probing entangled and topological systems.
The successful candidate will conduct research at NIST on design, nanofabrication and measurements of innovative grating-based devices and structures for a novel neutron interferometer under the mentorship of Dr. Nikolai Klimov and in collaboration with inter-disciplinary NIST team.
The candidate will have an opportunity to: - Work in the state-of-the-art NIST NanoFab class 100 cleanroom facility - Be a member of a multidisciplinary collaboration team - Publish in prestigious scientific journals and present at technical conferences
QUALIFICATIONS: - Ph.D. or equivalent experience in natural sciences or engineering - Substantial hands-on experience in micro/nano-fabrication and cleanroom processes - In-depth knowledge of advanced lithographic techniques, DRIE, thin-film deposition - A good publication record demonstrating original thinking, and ability to conduct research both independently, and collaboratively - MEMs/NEMs and/or microfluidics device modeling and nanofabrication is a plus - Effective written and oral communication skills
