SEARCH FOR FOUNDING CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF INTEGRATED SCIENCES
Claremont McKenna College
Claremont McKenna College (CMC) seeks an accomplished scientist and educator to serve as Founding Chair of its new Department of Integrated Sciences. CMC will invest up to $350 million in the creation of a Department and a new facility that will house at least 25 faculty. The Department of Integrated Sciences will transform science education at one of the top liberal arts institutions in the nation, while staying true to the unique mission of a student-centric, liberal arts institution that actively prepares students for responsible leadership in business, government, and the professions. The Department will be interdisciplinary, computationally grounded, and highly research-active, and feature strong academic relations with the social sciences and the humanities.
Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty, the Founding Chair will work with the faculty, the Board of Trustees, and senior College leadership to launch and lead a future-oriented, integrated science department from the ground-up—shaping and advancing a vision of interdisciplinary and computational teaching and scholarship; recruiting, developing, and retaining a diverse group of teacher-scholars; developing forward-looking curricula for majors and non-majors alike; overseeing the development of a brand-new physical infrastructure; fostering inclusivity and student success; and guiding CMC and its partners in The Claremont Colleges during a time of exciting transition and change.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished professional with a strong commitment to science education in a liberal arts setting and significant leadership experience. Competitive candidates must be fluent in the development of new computational methods in the sciences, engaged in the big questions of scientific inquiry, dedicated to teaching and research with undergraduate students, and interested in the relations between science and society, business, and public policy.
Claremont McKenna College has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment of the Founding Chair of the Department of Integrated Sciences. All inquiries, nominations, and applications should be directed in confidence to:
