We have an opening for a physicist / system engineer Postdoctoral Researcher to participate in research, development and modeling of advanced solid-state laser technology in support of the world class laser fusion driver in the National Ignition facility (NIF). This position offers the unique opportunity to conduct experiments on NIF in order to advance laser performance to meet emerging experimental needs. The position is in the Beamline Integrated Performance Group within the Laser Science and Technology & Systems Engineering Program of the NIF & Photon Science Directorate.
Essential Duties - Perform system level analysis and modeling of NIF laser to assess impact of sub-system performance on overall system performance and identify areas of improvement. - Plan and conduct measurements to characterize NIF laser sub-system performance and feed result into system level model. - Plan, execute and interpret experiments to advance the performance of the NIF laser. - Collaborate with laboratory scientists and engineers to develop concept, carry out design and field advanced laser components or laser diagnostics on NIF. - Support NIF laser operation by analyzing and trending laser performance data to ensure that NIF laser meets and maintains its performance specification. - Work with users of NIF facility to deliver desired NIF laser performance while maintaining machine safety. - Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of researchers internally and externally. - Work within a dynamic team environment to document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals and present results within the Department of Energy (DOE) community and at conferences. - Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Recent PhD in Laser Physics, Applied Physics, General Physics, Optics or Optoelectronics, or related field or discipline - Knowledge of and experience with system level modeling of complex laser systems. - Experience with experimental physics in one or more of the following areas: solid state laser physics and technology, femtosecond and picosecond short pulse generation and amplification, nonlinear optical frequency conversion, optical sensors and laser diagnostics. - Experience analyzing and trending complex data. - Experience developing independent research projects, including publication of peer-reviewed literature. - Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multi-disciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
Desired Qualifications - Experience working in a large-scale experimental facility.

Note: This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
