We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on understanding the structure of nuclei far from stability through decay spectroscopy studies. This position resides in the Low Energy Nuclear Physics Experimental Program in the Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our research team, you will study exotic nuclear decay modes to understand nuclear structure at the extremes of nuclear stability. You will have the opportunity to fully participate in all facets of the experiments, including design of the experiment, detector development and testing, detector setup and on-line data acquisition, data analysis, data interpretation, and publication of the results.
Contribute to the setup and operation of the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) at the radioactive ion beam facility, CARIBU, at Argonne National Laboratory
Utilize a data acquisition system based on digital signal processing and develop analysis software as required
Evaluate, interpret, and publish decay spectroscopy data acquired with MTAS and auxiliary detectors
Participate in decay spectroscopy studies performed at radioactive beam facilities that use heavy ion beams for the production of exotic nuclei (e.g. at RIKEN in Japan and FRIB at MSU)
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
A PhD in experimental nuclear physics or a related discipline completed within the last five years
Knowledge of C/C++ programing and/or Linux systems
Experience in the operation and data analysis of large detector arrays for nuclear physics experiments
Experience in digital signal processing techniques
Familiarity with decay spectroscopy experimental techniques and theoretical interpretation of the results
Experience with detector simulations using GEANT4
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
This position requires frequent travel to accelerator laboratories to perform experiments. These will include sites within the US and possibly in other countries (e.g. Japan).
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position. Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to PSDrecruit@ornl.gov. Please include the title of the position in the subject line.
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
