Research Support Specialist III - CHESS X-ray Detector Lead
Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE)
The Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based ScienceS and Education (CLASSE) studies particle beams and accelerators, photon science, particle physics and the early universe, and serves students, the public and scientists from Cornell and around the world. The research missions of this laboratory are, in many respects, unique in the world. CLASSE has an opening for a CHESS X-ray detector Lead (Research Support Specialist III). CHESS (Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source) is a subdivision of CLASSE that specializes in X-ray research. Visiting scientists from a variety of disciplines come to CHESS to utilize the high-energy X-rays to study various samples. CHESS staff provide technical support to visiting researchers and also maintain and upgrade the experimental facilities.
Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Serve as the X-Ray Detector Lead to support the use of more than 30 X-ray detectors at CHESS, which include commercially available products as well as customized equipment developed and built in-house.
Assist with the development and maintenance of experimental facilities and determining how to best achieve the necessary research objectives.
This position shares responsibility for designing, developing, assembling, and commissioning specialized equipment; tracking and analyzing research data and instrument performance; writing and/or modifying computer programs and scripts; troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining specialized laboratory equipment; and assisting scientific staff and users of the facility during their visits.
Manage special development projects to design and improve experimental equipment/systems for use in the laboratory including large laboratory upgrades.
Functionally supervise a team of technical staff to support detector use for integration with data collection.
Required qualifications: Master's degree or equivalent in a scientific or technical field with at least three years of laboratory experience. General laboratory skills in support of scientific research in a laboratory setting, including experience with computer, mechanical, and electronic equipment. Capable of adapting to the rapidly changing needs of a research environment. Able to receive directions and to communicate effectively across all research groups in the department. Have a work history demonstrating sound judgement and time management skills. Work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to provide after-hours and on-call support during experimental runs (approximately 150 days/year).
Preferred qualifications: Experience in X-ray detector integration with SPEC and EPICS control system software. Experience with Linux, scripting languages such as bash and python, and version control systems such as git and subversion. Experience with networking, and configuring computers and devices to communicate across separate subnets. Experience in a customer service/support setting.
