We are seeking an Intern Year Round - R&D Undergrad
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Support a cross-disciplinary team tasked with the development and implementation of a site-wide materials information management solution called GRANTA
Assist with data entry, develop importers for data entry, develop exporters for data users, and provide support to a cross-section of scientists and engineers with a range of material data information needs
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
Currently an undergraduate student (sophomore or junior level) studying Computer Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field
Completed coursework in basic chemistry, physics, and engineering (including laboratory courses)
Experience with data collection and spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel)
Working knowledge of and ability to use Python code
Must be able to work locally in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Experience working in a research laboratory setting
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, databases, and MATLAB
Completed/enrolled in an Introduction to Materials course
Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
Strong oral and written communication skills
The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, thermal spray deposition, cold spray deposition, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, and additive manufacturing for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized. Thermal spray capabilities include both conventional (flame, plasma, twin-wire arc, HVOF) and advanced technologies: cold spray and low pressure plasma spray. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), diamond and laser machining, laser etching, micro-metrology, as well as technical consulting. Additive manufacturing encompasses both direct write (aerosol ink jet printing, extrusion casting, and conformal printing) and metal additive (powder bed and LENS). Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.
