Leaders of Independent Junior Research Group (JRG) 2019
The Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) opens a few positions for leaders of Independent Junior Research Group (JRG) in theoretical physics and related fields. The APCTP (https://www.apctp.org), founded in 1996, is a non-governmental organization aiming for an international center dedicated to excellence in research and the training of young scientists in the Asia-Pacific region.
These positions are open to strengthen the in-house research program of the Center by forming new JRGs. The Center has sixteen member countries and forms a research network center of the Asia Pacific region in the field of theoretical physics through various academic activities. We encourage applications in the area of theoretical physics, including but not limited to astrophysics, condensed matter physics, nuclear/hadron physics, particle physics, string theory, and statistical physics. The existing JRGs at the Center can be found at the APCTP homepage (http://www.apctp.org). Each JRG leader is granted academic independence and encouraged to build his/her own research group. JRG leaders are also expected to promote and take advantage of the connection with other research centers of the world including the Asia Pacific region.
Funding is initially available for three years, renewable up to two additional years depending on the research performance and the availability of resources for the program. An annual salary, including severance pay, will start from KRW 65,000,000 depending on research experience and qualification. In addition to the salary, complimentary housing, office, and research fund including part of relocation costs are provided. The research fund may be used for hiring postdoctoral fellows and students, as well as for covering research activities. The starting date is expected to be August 1, 2019 but is negotiable.
You should apply by sending the application form which can be downloaded at the APCTP website (https://www.apctp.org/myboard/read.php?id=18&Board=job) via email by March 10, 2019 (UTC +09:00). You must submit with your application:
1. a curriculum vitae;
2. a short description of research accomplishments with a publication list;
3. a statement of proposed work;
4. a recommendation letter respectively from two referees: the two letters of recommendation should be arranged to be sent directly from your referees by the application deadline.
NOTE: Each document submitted for items 1 to 4 above must be in English, combined in a single PDF file, unsigned and not encrypted.

About Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics
Welcome to the Asia-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics(APCTP). The center was established in 1996 with the ten member countries of the Asia-Pacific region with the first president, Prof. C. N. Yang. The primary aim of the founding members was to build a hub-institute of theoretical physics in the Asia-Pacific region to facilitate collaboration and exchange of scientists of the Asia-Pacific region, and to provide a platform for scientists of less advanced region. Of course, this mission can only be fulfilled with close collaboration with the broader international community. As of today, our member countries has grown to become 16 from the original 10 countries.
After 20 some years, the Center now runs strong in-house research programs: Junior Research Group(JRG), which promotes young independent researchers to leadership roles; Young Scientist Training, which provides post-doctoral fellows ample opportunities to work with scientists of the center as well as of POSTECH. In particular, the JRG program, introduced by Prof. Peter Fulde, our former President(2007-2013), with a support from the Max Planck Society in 2007, has been very successful so that other institutes in K...orea have launched similar programs. The Center also supports various scientific activities all year round: Conferences and Workshops, Focus programs, External/Joint activities in collaboration with the member countries and partner institutes. Every year about 3,000 scientists are participating to these activities.
With increasing number of the member countries, the original mission of the center, being a networking center for the theoretical physics in AP-region, is becoming even more in demand. In particular, as of November 2017, the headquarter of the AAPPS(Association of the Asia-Pacific Physical Societies) has nestled in our center. This is a great event for both APCTP and AAPPS and we believe that two major Asia-Pacific organizations can serve better the physics community of the Asia-Pacific region. In future, our service and dedication will not be limited in the AP-region but will go over to the rest of the world because the spread of scientific knowledge is the most peaceful way to cultivate our civilization.
