The UC San Diego Department of Physics invites nominations, including self-nominations, for the newly established Margaret Burbidge Visiting Professorship Award for the Academic Year 2019 – 2020. Women faculty members and research scientists in any area of physics or astronomy are eligible for nomination. Non-U.S. citizens must be eligible for J-1 Scholar visa status. A UC San Diego faculty host must be identified prior to nomination submission.
The purpose of the visiting professorship is to bring eminent female physicists to UC San Diego on a short-term basis for collaborative research interactions within the department. The appointee is not required to formally teach; however, a department colloquium and public talks to students are encouraged.
For details about terms of appointment, stipend, requirements, and online application, please visit: go.ucsd.edu/2NtN1Du. Nomination/application deadline is Thursday, January 31, 2019.
The professorship is made possible by the generous support of the Heising-Simons Foundation.
About University of California, San Diego
The Division of Physical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, was founded by Nobel laureates and members of the National Academy of Sciences. Our Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, and Physics have all played a central role in UC San Diego’s rapid rise to national and international prominence. Just as it was at its founding, the division is broad in scope and inherently interdisciplinary.
Researchers within the division delve into scientific and computational issues that are of critical relevance to all facets of society. We address climate change, fabricate nanoparticles to image tumors and deliver drugs, probe the fundamental nature of matter, trace the evolution of the universe, hunt for elusive sub-atomic particles, design detection systems for toxins and explosives, to name only some of the faculty’s achievements. Graduate students have the opportunity to work with leaders in their fields.
Because the physical sciences are fundamental to all disciplines, including engineering, medicine and biology, we contribute to the education of most undergraduate students at UC San Diego.
