Biological Sciences, Engineering and Technology: Biomedical
The Iowa SUMR Program provides highly motivated undergraduates exposure to the career and training pathway of the physician-scientist. Participants carry out independent research under the direction of an established mentor in a clinical or basic science department. They gain an appreciation for the role of the physician-scientist in asking pertinent medically-related research questions and carrying the results of the work to the patient’s bedside.
In addition to the intensive laboratory experience, SUMR Program participants have the opportunity to:
Gain clinical exposure through shadowing experiences with physician-scientist mentors and Emergency Room personnel (2-4 times during the 8 week period).
Participate in a weekly seminar series demonstrating how science and medicine intersect. Lectures are typically presented by physician-scientists to show how scientific investigation impacts the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human disease.
Participate in career development sessions in the areas of medical/graduate school admissions and personal statement writing.
Interact with current MD/PhD students during weekly informal chat sessions.
Present research findings at the end of the session.
About Iowa MSTP Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SUMR)
The University of Iowa SUMR Program offers an intensive experience for highly motivated undergraduates interested in future combined MD/PhD training for a career as a physician-scientist. The program provides the opportunity to conduct hands-on intensive research with scientists at The University of Iowa. Participants carry out independent research conducted under the direction of an established mentor in the biomedical sciences. In addition, the program offers weekly seminars emphasizing the intersection of science and medicine, career development seminars, case-based learning sessions and physician-scientist shadowing. Participants gain an appreciation for the role of the physician-scientist in asking pertinent medically related research questions, carrying the results of the work to the patient's bedside. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who anticipate graduating with a bachelor’s degree in the biological or physical sciences in the academic year following the summer of planned participation.
