The Biointerfaces lnstitute (BI) is a multi-disciplinary, world class research institute bringing researchers and students together to study how biological systems respond to the introduction of material, and conversely, how an engineered interface responds to or is compatible with a biological system. The BI brings together researchers with expertise in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, who will utilize the principles of Chemical Biology (high throughput synthesis and screening, characterization of (bio)molecular structure, dynamics and interactions) to the development of characterization of new biologically functional surfaces and materials.
The Surface Characterization Suite Lab Technician will report directly to the Director and indirectly report to the Business Manager for all financial, administrative and human resource matters. Working with the Director and Associate Director responsibilities will include training of students on equipment, assisting Principal Investigators with experiments, running samples for internal and external clients and ensuring that equipment is properly maintained and utilized. The SC Suite Technician will be responsible for ensuring that the Surface Characterization Suite meets Health and Safety Standards. He/she will make sure that all students and other users’ training is recorded and complete. He/She will assist in the scheduling of the equipment and will help deal with any conflicts regarding usage should they arise.
The incumbent will be primarily responsible for running, maintaining and calibrating an Imaging and Scanning X-RAY Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) System and training users on the system. The incumbent will also oversee a range of instruments in the surface characterization suites: IR microscope, imaging Surface Plasmon Resonance, various instruments for physical and chemical characterization including but not limited to: a dynamic light scattering apparatus, an imaging ellipsometer, an electrophoretic surface charge analyzer and a particle shape analyzer.
