The American Institute of Physics is seeking several enthusiastic science writing interns who are passionate about cutting-edge science and reporting. The internship openings are available for 1) its editorially independent news website, Inside Science; and 2) its public information "media services" program; and 3) a position dedicated to the production of videos for Inside Science. These are onsite positions for undergraduate or graduate student journalists who have studied either news reporting or science, and can be part time during the school year or full time during the summer. These paid internships are under the direction of the News & Media Services team. The part-time internship is expected to last for at least 8 weeks during the winter and/or spring of 2018, and can be extended for the full term of a student's quarter or semester. The 2018 summer internship is full-time and expected to last 12 weeks. Hours, start date and schedule will be flexible.
The successful journalist candidate for Inside Science will be responsible for independently reporting breaking science news under the guidance and direction of AIP staff. This includes pitching, writing and editing news stories for: Inside Science News Service (AP-style wire service for science news) and the online content that accompanies Inside Science videos. The successful PIO intern will work independently to write and research topics for press releases and potentially contribute to AIP's social media efforts. The video production intern will identify, pitch, research, and contribute to the production and editing of Inside Science videos. Course credit for internship requirement will be certified where applicable. Our office is within walking distance from College Park Metro and near the University of Maryland
Qualifications: Recent graduates and individuals pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees in relevant fields such as Journalism, Broadcasting or Science Interest and demonstrated ability in news writing; excellent writing and communication skills; very detail oriented and internet savvy. Interest in science and experience preparing news items are needed.
At least two non-fiction news writing or video samples for a general-public audience are required. Please include at least one reference and specify your interest in a full- or part-time opportunity and dates of availability. Applications preferred by March 1.
