: We are seeking a technical staff member to join our collaborative team environment\. The analyst will perform solid mechanics and/or structural\-dynamics research, development, modeling, and simulation to support a variety of projects \(e\.g\. nuclear safety, design, and qualification\), and customers \(e\.g\., the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security\)\. The successful candidate will use state\-of\-the\-art tools to conduct computational simulations \(e\.g\., linear\-elastic static; large\-deformation plasticity; nonlinear structural dynamics; shock; vibration; hydrodynamics; and coupled thermal\-mechanical\-electrical\)\. Appropriate uncertainty quantification will be used with FEM/FEA to predict component or system behavior under specific operating conditions\. Verification and validation of various modeling techniques will be used to build model credibility\. The analysts in our department work closely with experimental mechanics, code development, and material science organizations to provide validated results of extremely complex and challenging problems\. Required: + Master's degree in mechanical, civil, applied engineering, or other applicable engineering field;+ Educational background in solid mechanics, structural analysis or structural dynamics;+ Experience with modeling and simulation tools \(e\.g\., the finite\-element method\); ability to assess tool capabilities and limitations when selecting the appropriate methodology for model development and simulation;+ Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q security clearance\. Desired: The following qualifications are helpful, but not required: + Ph\.D\. degree in mechanical, civil, applied engineering, or other applicable engineering field;+ Demonstrated ability to present and publish research findings;+ Demonstrated experience in computational mechanics or code development for engineering sciences applications;+ Demonstrated programming \(e\.g\., Fortran, C, or C\+\+\) or scripting experience;+ Experience with finite\-element methods, continuum and noncontinuum mechanics, parallel algorithms, and/or contact mechanics;+ Background in mechanical design;+ Plasticity and material\-failure modeling experience\. Department Description: The Multi\-Physics Modeling and Simulation Department at Sandia National Laboratories, California, conducts a wide range of computational simulations, including linear\-elastic static; large\-deformation, nonlinear structural dynamics; hydrodynamics; and solid mechanics\. To complete these simulations, the department uses a variety of state\-of\-the\-art analytical tools\. Typical departmental programs include the following: detailed structural and thermal analyses of weapon systems; analysis\-based design guidance for weapon components; the development of forging and welding modeling capabilities; pressure vessel analyses, including aging and failure; hydrodynamics modeling and simulations; and failure model development and implementation \(metals and composites\)\.
