: The Engine Combustion Research Department has an opening for a laser\-optics\-electronics technologist to join our world\-class research team\. We are seeking candidates who are self\-motivated and who enjoy taking considerable individual responsibility and initiative\. Our expectation is that the successful applicant will not have all of the skills identified below, but will value and seek the opportunities to learn the skills required\. On any given day, you may be called on to do the following: + Setting\-up, operating, and maintaining commercial and custom\-built scientific laser systems, including high\-power pulsed Nd:YAG lasers, optical parametric oscillators \(OPOs\) and non\-linear frequency conversion optics, pulsed dye lasers, CW ion lasers, and solid\-state lasers;+ Developing enhancements and modifications to commercial laser systems to improve their ability to meet stringent optical characteristics;+ Servicing and further development of custom, high\-powered pulsed LED assemblies capable of 10 ns pulses at MHz repetition rates;+ Design, setup, and assembly of complex laboratory experimental apparatus involving optically accessible engines and high\-pressure devices instrumented with laser/optical imaging capabilities as well as conventional transducers \(thermocouples, pressure transducers, etc\.\);+ Design, component procurement, and assembly of custom electronic devices in compliance with standards employed by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories \(NRTL\); development of electronic interfaces to synchronize lasers and other imaging or measurement devices with each other and with the engine;+ Design and assembly of electronic circuits and programming of desktop and embedded applications using common tools and languages \(e\.g\. SPICE, EAGLE, Matlab, Labview, Python, C\+\+, VHDL, Verilog\);+ Use of electronic and/or optical test instruments;+ Use of CAD software for panel layout, electronic circuit and printed circuit\-board design, or mechanical component design;+ Supporting resident and visiting researchers and coordinating research support activities with peers, facilities and maintenance personnel, and external suppliers;+ Assisting with laboratory operations, including tracking department property, complying with all environmental and safety requirements, and developing required documentation\. **Selected applicant will be required to pass a Job Placement Assessment before beginning the job to ensure that they can perform the essential physical requirements, with or without accomations\.** Required: + A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or the Physical Sciences or an Associate's degree with a minimum of two years additional relevant work experience;+ Demonstrated understanding of laser physics, optics, and basic electronics;+ Demonstrated hands\-on skills in the servicing/repair/development of laser systems, electronic equipment, or other laboratory equipment;+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L\-level security clearance\. Department Description: The mission of the Engine Combustion Research Department at Sandia's Combustion Research Facility is to develop the scientific understanding required to build high\-efficiency, clean internal combustion engines \(ICEs\) and to optimize these engines for fuels from conventional and diverse future sources\.
